Ahern, Kylie (Strings)

Hi, my name is Ms. Kylie Ahern and I am excited to teach Strings at Northland Preparatory Academy this year. This will be my first year teaching at NPA.

I began my studies on violin at the age of four with my teacher Mahlon Halleck in Oklahoma. I earned my Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2013, where I studied violin and viola with Dr. Laura Talbott. During my time at OSU, I was concertmaster of the Oklahoma State Symphony Orchestra and a member of Frontiers New Music Ensemble.

I graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Suzuki Violin Pedagogy. I studied Suzuki pedagogy with Dr. Louise Scott and Dr. Karin Hallberg at NAU. I am currently the Assistant Suzuki Strings Coordinator at the NAU Community Music and Dance Academy, where I teach individual lessons, Suzuki group classes, and Music Mind Games.

In the past, I have spent summers at Brevard Music Center in North Carolina and Pierre Monteux School of Conducting in Maine, where I performed orchestral works alongside musicians from across the country.

I have taught Suzuki Violin in a K-2 program at Marshall Elementary School in Flagstaff since 2014. This year I will be teaching Kindergarten students at Marshall Elementary School two mornings a week. I currently play violin in the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and viola in the Skylight City String Quartet.

In my free time, I enjoy taking my dog Rigby outside to explore Flagstaff, reading a good book, and going for a bike ride.

Description:

STRINGSXINTENTXFORMX2019-20

Welcome sixth grade students! Students who enroll in the Beginning Strings class will have the opportunity to learn to play an orchestral string instrument this year: violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will learn the basic skills necessary for playing a string instrument, learn to read musical notation, learn to follow a conductor, and have the opportunity to play and perform together in an orchestral setting.

Students will be learning from Essential Elements Book 1 this year. The book will be provided for each student the first day of Beginning Strings. NPA has a limited inventory of instruments available to rent. Please do not rent an instrument until students are assigned an instrument for the year and informed which size instrument to rent. It is important for students to learn on an instrument that is the correct size.

Instruments will be assigned the first official day of Strings class on Thursday, August 16. If the student already has an instrument at home, please bring this instrument to the first day of Strings class on August 16. I will do my best to honor the first instrument preference for each student this year. However, at times it might be necessary to assign a student to a secondary instrument choice in order to balance the orchestra with enough string players in each section. If a student is already taking private lessons on a certain string instrument, I will be sure they are assigned to that particular instrument in Beginning Strings.
